Exception PCB Installs Orbotech Nuvogo 1000R Direct Imager

Exception PCB has invested in the Orbotech Nuvogo 1000R, a laser direct imaging system that raises the precision of our inner and outer layer imaging across a range of complex PCB technologies.

What the Nuvogo 1000R delivers

The Nuvogo 1000R uses automated laser direct imaging to achieve imaging precision down to sub-20µm, removing the registration limitations associated with traditional film-based processes. It supports consistent, repeatable results across fine line and space geometries, making it well suited to the technically demanding work we carry out for customers in aerospace, defence, medical and industrial sectors.

The system improves imaging accuracy for HDI, flex, rigid-flex and multilayer PCBs, contributing to tighter trace accuracy, finer line spacing and improved first-pass yield.

Impact on our operation

Moving to laser direct imaging at this level of precision reduces process variability at a critical stage of manufacture. It supports faster turnaround on prototype and NPI work by removing tooling steps, and it contributes to improved yield by reducing imaging-related defects earlier in the process.

The Nuvogo 1000R also reduces material waste compared to film-based imaging, which aligns with our wider focus on improving the environmental efficiency of our manufacturing operation.

Part of our ongoing investment programme

This installation follows a series of recent investments in manufacturing technology at our Tewkesbury facility, including our Schmoll Speedmaster drilling machine and atg-LM A9 flying probe test systems. Each investment is focused on improving process capability, increasing capacity and maintaining the standards our customers in regulated and high-reliability sectors require.
